SOMETHING! began with aha moment from an exhausted mother of 3, Shamanth Pereira.
While cleaning up my then-4-year-old’s eleventy billionth loo roll mishap (he was keen on flushing ENTIRE rolls of toilet paper down the loo), I couldn’t help but feel guilty about the waste. Randomly googling that night when I should have been getting more sleep, I discovered that we cut down 27,000 trees each day just to wipe our bums!
As well as the deforestation issue, all those plastic-wrapped toilet rolls were contributing towards the single-use plastic crisis our planet is facing. A seed of an idea started to grow...
During maternity leave from my job in finance, I’d had experience with bamboo while researching fabrics for a sustainable fashion brand I was trying to launch. What about using bamboo as toilet paper? As one of the fastest-growing plants, bamboo was a perfect swap for tree-based toilet paper, and the UN even includes it as a source to improve forest cover by as much as 10%.
Take off the single-use plastic wrap and replace it with recyclable paper wrapping, then contain the rolls in cardboard boxes, and you’re on to even more of a winner! Boom. Something Co was born.
But I didn’t want to stop there. Inspired by my grandmother's brilliant eco-friendly home and kitchen hacks, I wanted to really start making positive changes around the house to reduce my impact on the planet and be a good role model for my kids. And this remains my mission for Something Co - to inspire busy people like me to make easy eco swaps to their everyday essentials, for a more sustainable approach to the daily routine. And so our household product range continues to grow.
I hope you’ll join the Something Co family and see how easy it is to be eco.
